Title: Five: November
Pairing: Randy/Gale

Summary: "It depends on you." Randy didn't say anything so Gale glanced over at him. "You've already made up your mind though, right?"
"Not one hundred percent. There's always a chance, I suppose." Randy met Gale's eyes, challenging him to ask.

November was starting to feel like January to Randy. He knew it wasn't really that cold but the chill seemed to set deeper in his bones this year, stay with him longer. He'd blame it on his age but he'd only turned twenty-seven this year. Just that month, in fact. He thought back to the small party the cast and crew had held for him, the dinner they'd all gone to that night and the way Gale had laughed that night over the flames of his candles.
He pulled his jacket around him a little tighter, rubbing his hands together to warm them at least a little.
He finished his scene with Sharon and Peter and bid them a quick goodbye for the weekend. He was running behind for his plans now.
He was meeting Gale at a small club a few blocks away from Church Street to watch Kim and her band perform. He wasn't really looking forward to it but at the same time he knew it would be a "safe" outing.
He wouldn't admit to himself that there was something between himself and Gale he needed protecting from.
He cabbed it back to his apartment, finally making it through Friday night rush hour traffic. He leaned back against his door after he closed it and considered calling Gale to tell him... anything. He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to get his thoughts in order.
Nothing happened.
He sighed and got ready to go out.

"I like her new stuff," Randy told Gale during a pause between Kim's songs. They were sitting at a table near the back of the club to avoid being recognized as best as possible.
Gale took a drink of his beer- his fourth already- before answering. "Yeah, it's alright."
"There's a lot of you in it," Randy persisted. Gale made a face, more to himself.
"It's alright," he repeated. "When's Simon coming again?"
"Probably a couple weeks. He's taken on more than he can handle, I think," Randy picked up his lighter from the table, played with it. He'd started smoking again just before his birthday. Held out longer than Gale expected.
"Don't we all," Gale commented easily. Randy blinked. "Let's go have a smoke."
Randy followed Gale automatically and left their conversation at the table. They also left their coats, which Randy immediately regretted. He breathed in the frigid night air as they stepped off to the side outside the club, away from the other smokers.
"Have any big Christmas plans?" Randy asked as they lit their cigarettes.
Gale shook his head. "Haven't decided yet if I'm going home or staying here. Depends on Kim's schedule, I guess. Have to make flight plans soon though. Hard to believe there's less then a month, hmm?" Randy agreed.
"The season is going too quickly but at the same time it feels like we still have ages left to shoot. Does it feel like the last season to you?"
Gale shrugged. "I'm still waiting for the final offer for an extra season. Guess we'll see what happens then."
"You really think they'll pitch another season?" Randy asked, as he wrapped his free arm around himself.
"I can't see them not at least trying."
Randy took a drag, exhaled slowly. "What if they do?"
Gale shrugged again. "What if?"
"Would you do it?"
"Would you?"
Randy shrugged this time. "I asked you first."
Gale stared at the cars driving by, quiet. "It depends on you." Randy didn't say anything so Gale glanced over at him. "You've already made up your mind though, right?"
"Not one hundred percent. There's always a chance, I suppose." Randy met Gale's eyes, challenging him to ask.
Gale stomped out his smoke. "Come on. It's fucking freezing out here and you're shaking."
Randy finished his cigarette quickly and they walked back into the club.
_____________________________________________________
They waited for Kim after she finished her second set, near the stage to catch her as she came off.
"Hey!" She kissed Gale quickly as she stepped down and wrapped her arm around his waist. "Hey Randy, thanks for coming. It's been a while!"
"Yeah, we've both been busy I guess. I really enjoyed it, Kim. Love the new stuff," Randy smiled at her. "You were great."
"Thanks! So what are you doing now? We're going out another club now, maybe to Tim's later," She referred to one of her band members. "Want to come along?"
Randy smiled but shook his head. "Thanks but it's been a long week. I'm looking forward to getting home."
"I hear you!" Kim laughed and turned to Gale. "Ready?"
"You know, why don't you go ahead and I'll see you tomorrow? It has been a long week," Gale agreed with Randy.
Kim smiled but Randy could see it was a little strained. "Are you sure? I could-"
"No, it's fine, really. You've got stuff to do. I've got some things to do early tomorrow so we'll meet up later, okay?" Kim nodded and leaned up to kiss him again, longer this time. Gale wrapped his arms around her and kissed back.
Randy pondered which reaction he should outwardly have that would seem healthiest to anyone randomly watching.
Gale lit another cigarette as soon as they left Kim and stepped outside the club. Randy reached for his pack but stopped himself, it was too familiar.
"What's going on?" he asked.
"Want to walk? It's not that far." Gale started walking down the street in the direction of Randy's apartment. He had no choice but to follow.
"It's fifteen blocks. And you're avoiding my question."
"Good walking weather. And I'm not avoiding it. I'm walking."
"Fuck you, Gale." Randy reached for his cigarettes.
"Fuck you! It's none of your business, Randy." Gale barely hesitated in his step.
Randy sighed and kept up with Gale until he slowed down a little. They walked together in silence, Randy with his hand in his pocket- constantly considering that cigarette- and Gale letting his burn down more than he smoked it.
"So it's none of my business," Randy finally said. "Now what's going on?"
"It's nothing, really. We're just not connecting a lot lately. Different cities, different schedules. Things will get settled once she finally finishes up in the studio, I'm sure. Transitional period," he said dryly.
"And if it's not?" Randy asked.
"Then it's not. Shit happens, right?"
"Guess so. There is a lot of you in that music, Gale," Randy repeated his comment from earlier in the evening.
"I know," Gale sighed. "I'm just not used to it."
Randy snorted. "You're turning into an old man. Set in your ways."
Gale rolled his eyes. "Here it comes."
They walked and talked comfortably the rest of the way until they reached Randy's building. Gale followed him inside without asking.
Randy turned on a couple table lamps as he walked into the apartment, like always. It was only a little after midnight but it felt much later to him, and earlier all at once.
He rolled his head tiredly as he turned on a lamp in the living room, casting a soft glow on everything in the room. He didn't say anything when he felt Gale's arms wrap around him from behind. He bit his lip but didn't comment when he turned around. He blinked up at Gale but remained silent when the other man cupped his face with his hands and leaned down to kiss him- that kind of kiss.
His reaction to seeing Kim and Gale kiss from then on would always be sympathy because this was the way someone was supposed to be kissed. Softly and slowly, with hands moving gently and eyes closed. Tongue working carefully and cautiously at first until permission was granted. Once upon a time permission was automatically granted but that was so long ago for both of them.
Randy brought his hands up to rest on Gale's hips, his fingers working into the belt loops of his jeans, holding him right there. He moved his body so their chests pressed together- nothing more. This wasn't that other kind of kiss.
Gale moved a hand to the back of Randy's neck, angling his head more, and rubbed his fingers in the shorter hair there- loving, missing, wanting the softness of this whole moment to last as long as possible.
Randy tightened his hands on Gale's hips and slowly pulled away. His lips were still pursed slightly as if he wanted to continue but he carefully stepped away. Gale trailed a finger down Randy's cheek as he let his hands drop.
"Maybe that's what's going on with Kim," Gale said softly. Randy rolled his eyes and walked a few steps away, the moment totally gone now.
"First off, let's not bring her into this and secondly don't use this as a reason to justify your waning feelings for your girlfriend," Randy shot at him.
"I'm not using this to justify anything," Gale barked back.
"You kissed me," Randy pointed a finger at him. "Remember that."
"You sure as hell weren't thinking about Kim when you kissed me back," Gale returned.
"It's not my respon-" he stopped, partly because that wasn't true and partly because he couldn't do this. Not with Gale. "We're not doing this. We're not going to turn this into anything more than what it was. You kissed me, I kissed back. End of story. Right?"
Gale sank down into an armchair as Randy perched on the arm of the couch. Both were suddenly very exhausted.
"We both know that's not it," Gale said quietly. "This is it Randy. This is all we have."
"I know," Randy replied.
"After this season there's no more ‘last times' or late night calls or-"
"I know," Randy repeated. "Don't you realize how many times that thought has been going through my head all fucking year? I don't like what's coming, Gale. Anymore than you. But it is and we have to deal with it. That's why I decided we shouldn't have any contact over the hiatus. To make it easier. But if I'd known how weird everything would be. How... not us we are..."
"You wouldn't have done it?" Gale asked sarcastically.
"I might have done it a different way," Randy sighed. "But I probably still would have done it."
"Is it going to be this way for the next five months?"
"I hope not. I'm trying here, Gale. I really am. There's just so much here. So much we'll never be rid of. I thought I was doing something good. Something right."
"Are we making this more complicated than it needs to be?"
"Probably."
"Has Simon said anything?" Gale cautioned a look at Randy.
"He's..." Randy shook his head. "He's Simon. What else can you say? Sometimes I think he's happier in New York and I wonder if that actually makes me happier. I don't think he's stupid though. What about Kim?"
"I think you can figure that out on your own," Gale smiled wryly. Randy moved to sit on the couch properly and curled up against the arm, watching Gale who propped his head up in his hand.
"So what do we do?" Randy asked tiredly, his voice barely carrying the few feet to Gale.
"We try harder. We stay friends no matter what. And ..."
Randy nodded. They watched each other for a long time, remembering something more familiar.
Continue to December.

Date: 2005-03-24 08:50 am (UTC)They're really complicted people, aren't they? Or maybe not. :))
I realized as I was writing that they were really whiny, resisting people. I wanted to smack them around but it was this or nothing because they refused to be written any other way. So I felt the need to include the line about making things more complicated than they should be. Cause they are!

Date: 2005-03-23 11:52 pm (UTC)Actually, rimming a prolapsed ass would probably be kinda gross. I read this freaky medical story where this old veteran had problems with his ass prolapsing, so he used to just... shove it back in there with an old artillery shell. And one day the shell got stuck, so he had to go to the hospital to get it removed, and told them that it was live. The bomb squad came in and built a lead box around his ass so they could remove the shell. Freeeeaky.

Date: 2005-03-24 08:46 am (UTC)I don't know why.
Also, um... sticking artillery shells up your ass? Not the smartest move, live or not. If I ever teach a sex-ed class I'll have to tell them that. FLARED BASES PEOPLE! FLARED BASES!
AND NO LIVE AMMUNITION!!!
Although it would bring a new meaning to "shooting his load". *ponders*

So v. v. angsty, and QUALITY angst at that - I've hit the jackpot! LOL. They just really need to stop being stupid and let themselves go already. Oh the sexual tension! GUH!

Oy, thats enough gushing, Kate.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to read and review! It means SO much!

Random lines I adore for various reasons, mostly just that you are brilliant:
Randy followed Gale automatically and left their conversation at the table. They also left their coats, which Randy immediately regretted. He breathed in the frigid night air as they stepped off to the side outside the club, away from the other smokers.
He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to get his thoughts in order.
