I'm so late with these but I'm having trouble focusing on too much tonight so I thought I'd type up some thoughts on the last few movies I've seen while I'm watching spill.com reviews of them.
I liked it, I did, but I definitely left the theatre a little disappointed, but not because the movie was bad. It wasn't bad AT ALL. It was something DIFFERENT for the summer movie season, which is awesome and something we rarely get from year to year.
I went into the movie with a certain perception about what was coming. I expected something more apocalyptic, more heart-stopping, more scary. I wasn't expecting to leave the movie wanting to cry.
I don't know if I really liked Wikus by the end of the movie. To me he really didn't redeem his attitudes toward the aliens. He spent the movie only wanting to return to his former life with his wife and his job. He didn't think about the possibility of the phones being tracked when he was calling home, etc.
I'm probably over thinking it all but I guess I went in expecting something that I'd really, really love--on par with a zombie movie. But I ended up with an action movie with a lot of heart and emotion. Which there's NOTHING wrong with and upon a re-watch when it comes out on dvd I might change my mind about it but as of right now it doesn't stand out to me as a GREAT movie. I don't even know if I'll buy this one when it comes out on dvd.
I'd certainly recommend people to watch it on the big screen because the camera work for some of it, the effects and the action demand the full-on huge screen treatment but it's not a horror movie, it's not a scary movie, it's nothing like that. It's kind of like when Watchmen came out and people thought it was an action movie, which is SO was not.
When I came home from this movie I sat down to write my thoughts out on this one because I couldn't quite put my finger on whether I liked it or not. But then a couple days passed so I deleted it.
I still don't know if I really liked it or not. It was okay at the time but it's not something I'd want to see again or will purchase, even when it goes to 2/$30 or whatever.
It was TOO LONG. Way too long. I couldn't get a bead on Adam Sandler's character, either. I think Seth Rogan's character was supposed to be the lead, really, because he's the only one who made any progress as a character, and not even that much.
Adam Sandler's character didn't change, not even when he was sick and thought he'd be dying. He didn't die and I think the movie would have been better if he had so the other characters could have had something to drive them toward self-discovery.
The two female characters in the movie--Leslie Mann and some new girl--are relatively horrible. Leslie Mann's character is a cheater and selfish, then a coward at the end when she chooses her husband instead of Adam Sandler. Not that she SHOULD but she spends the whole movie being "unhappy" and suspecting her husband of cheating, then when SHE cheats and he freaks out she decides to stay with him. I dont' even know.
The new girl who's a love interest for Seth Rogan was just TERRIBLE. She as one of those "I'm so unaffected by everything and I'll show absolutely no emotional reaction to anything, regardless if it's good or bad at all" ones. And it's SO ANNOYING. The way she gave her lines was hesitant and halting and I'm not sure if she smiled once throughout the whole damn things. I really dislike people in real life who never react to anything unless it's to one-up whatever you have to say and are constantly pessimistic. I don't want my movie characters to be like that, unless there's a purpose.
Also, Jason Schwartzman? I DO NOT GET THE APPEAL. There, I said it. Same with Zooey Deschenenl or whatever. DO NOT GET IT. But that's another story. Jason was a dick in this movie. But whatever.
It was funny in parts and it was a quieter movie and I did't HATE it but it definitely wasn't a GOOD movie. The more I think back on it the angrier I get, in fact.
I liked Little Nicky people. Little freaking Nicky. And I don't like this.
Fuck me gently jesus.
Can Rob Zombie just stop? Please?
This is his last attempt at butchering the Halloween franchise, at least for now. Word has it that there will be a third installment, but it's going to be in 3D and Zombie will NOT be involved. Wonders never cease.
First off, can we start with him casting THE MOST ANNOYING PERSON IN THE HISTORY OF MOVIES AS LAURIE STRODE?!?!?!?! Okay, not QUITE that bad, but a half hour into the first movie I wished that the twist would be that Michael would kill Laurie by the end. Scout Taylor Compton is one of the WORST ever.
I'm not a huge fan of the older horror franchises. I've seen some of the original Halloween installments, some of the Friday the 13th and so forth. The first Halloween didn't scare me, not by today's horror standards, but there's a classicness about it when you consider that this movie kicked off the slasher movie genre and that it relied on suspense and building fear, rather than gore and blood.
Zombie has taken that idea and shit all over it, giving us instead a killer that has a "purpose" (instead of making Michael just inherently fucked without reason) which makes things easier to figure out so he's not AS scary. He's also given us the honour of his wife's tits. Sherri Moon, can you PLEASE do something that doesn't revolve around your husband? PLEASE? ANYTHING? And Rob Zombie, can you do something with your wife that doesn't involve showing her naked/part naked body and/or tits? PLEASE?
I just don't know anymore. I kinda liked The Devil's Rejects when it first came out but I'm so fucking sick of Zombie that I can't even anymore. Also, he ruined "Free Bird" for me with that movie so I'm pissed because of that.
Between making Loomis an angry, useless idiot, Laurie whining all the fucking time and becoming a moody brat with ever-so-meaningful star tattoos on each hand, and Sherri fucking Moon appearing all in white with a white horse to Michael this movie can kiss my goddamn ass.
One of the BEST movies I've seen this summer? The Hurt Locker. Awesome, awesome. Great suspense, gripping look at the characters, heart wrenching. Loved it.
